Why does Schiedam need a smarter approach to waste dumping?

The city of Schiedam has many challenges when it comes to waste and cleaning. In Schiedam, this responsibility has been outsourced to waste processor Irado. An exploratory conversation between Irado and Camenai addressed the current waste problem and the need for a tool to act more quickly when it comes to waste dumping, especially dumping in underground containers (additions in jargon).

How do smart cameras and algorithms help with waste problems?

Camenai's solution is exactly suitable for this: quickly identifying unwanted issues and integrating them into the customer's daily processes. That is why a project started in 2024 where three vehicles, two from Irado and one from Supervision & Enforcement of the Municipality of Schiedam, are equipped with Camenai cameras. These vehicles continue to drive their usual routes but now also record thousands of images per day, where algorithms then signal additions. Herbert Dikken, department manager at Irado, explains: “The cameras were installed by Camenai in three vehicles, but we can easily exchange them ourselves between other vehicles, for example if one is at the garage. We were quickly surprised how well the algorithms recognize the additions, so we have much more insight into problem locations without making our planner's work more difficult.”

What will change if Irado starts detecting waste dumping itself?

The next step was to integrate with the planning: Irado receives reports of additions via various channels, which must then be addressed as quickly as possible. This was previously a passive process, where Irado depends on the processing time of resident reports by the municipality or on employees who happened to see an addition while working. By actively looking for additional positions himself, Irado is more in control and improves services for its residents and the municipality.
